Additional Training Overview

Newly licensed security guards must complete an additional 32-hours of security training.
Training is split into three sections: I, II, & III.

Section I training is your Guard Card course.
You must complete this training, undergo a background check (Live Scan), and submit your application prior to being licensed as a security guard. Once you are licensed, you are required to complete an additional 16-hours of training within 30-days of being licensed or date of employment, and an additional 16-hours of training within the first 6-months of being licensed or date of employment.

Training is split between “mandatory” and “elective” training.

In your first 30-days after being licensed or hired, you must complete:
- 8 hours of “Mandatory” training, &
- 8 hours of “elective Training

In your first 6-months after being licensed or hired, you must complete an additional:
- 8 hours of “Mandatory” training, &
- 8 hours of “elective Training

Your employer is responsible for providing you with 8-hours of Section III: Elective training:
Section III-A: Employer Policies & Orientation (4-hours), &
Section III-B: Post Orders & Assignments (4-hours).


Section II: Mandatory Training
(Online Training)

A. Public Relations (Community & Customer) (4 hours)

1. Recognizing Gender & Racial Harassment & Discrimination
2. Respect: • Stereotyping • Attitude
3. Verbal Skills / Crisis Intervention
4. Introduction to Diversity
5. Substance Abuse & Mental Illness
6. Ethics & Professionalism • Appearance • Command Presence • Proper Conduct

B. Observation & Documentation
(4 hours)

Topics to be discussed:

1. Report Writing
2. English as a Second Language
3. Observation and Patrol Techniques
4. Asking Appropriate Questions
5. Observing Suspects / Suspicious Activity

C. Communication and its Significance (4 hours)

Topics to be discussed:
1. Internal:
• Protocols Pursuant to Contract (Who to Contact & When)
• Radio / Monitors
• Other Technology
2. External:
• Emergency / First Responders
• Medical Personnel
• Police / Sheriff / Other Enforcement
• City Services / Government Services

D. Liability / Legal Aspects (4 hours)

Topics to be discussed:
1. Personal / Contractor / Employer
2. Criminal, Civil, Administrative
3. BSIS Code & Regulations
4. Role of a Security Guard
